New Mayan text confirms December 2012 end for calendar +video

"This text talks about ancient political history rather than prophecy," says Marcello A. Canuto, director of Tulane's Middle American Research Institute (MARI) and co-director of the excavations at La Corona in Guatemala.

The discovery, one of the most significant hieroglyphic finds in decades, was announced June 28 at the National Palace in Guatemala, according to a MARI statement.

Canuto and Tomas Barrientos of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, directing La Corona excavations, a site previously ravaged by looters, found the longest text ever discovered in Guatemala.

"Last year, we realised that looters of a particular building had discarded some carved stones because they were too eroded to sell on the antiquities black market," said Barrientos.

"So, we knew they found something important, but we also thought they might have missed something," added Barrientos.

Carved on staircase steps, it records 200 years of La Corona history, states David Stuart, director of the Mesoamerica Center at the University of Texas (Austin), US, who was part of a 1997 expedition that first explored the site.


 

While deciphering these new finds in May, Stuart recognised the 2012 reference on a stairway block bearing 56 delicately carved hieroglyphs.

It commemorated a royal visit to La Corona in AD 696 by the most powerful Maya ruler of that time, Yuknoom Yich'aak K'ahk' of Calakmul, only a few months after his defeat by long-standing rival Tikal in AD 695.

Thought by scholars to have been killed in this battle, this ruler was visiting allies and allaying their fears after his defeat.

"This was a time of great political turmoil in the Maya region and this king felt compelled to allude to a larger cycle of time that happens to end in 2012," says Stuart.

So, rather than prophesy, the 2012 reference places this king's troubled reign and accomplishments into a larger cosmological framework.

"In times of crisis, the ancient Maya used their calendar to promote continuity and stability rather than predict apocalypse," says Canuto. (IANS

Review:

The Rapture of Darkness's subtitle is "A Novel of Hope for the Coming Age," and this is just what I found this book to be. A look at the current headlines suggests that a different age is indeed coming upon us, whether we like it or not, as traditional religious and political values are challenged as never before. This book does offer hope in the deep richness of our universal, Catholic (and not only Irish) heritage. It reads as fresh (and at times as dark) as today's newspapers, but it's also suffused with the light that comes from the Scriptures and the Church, including the writings of our 2,000 year heritage of saints. I was impressed with the author's knowledge of the great Irish saints, some well-known, and others hardly heard of anymore. He uses their legacies and prophecies to weave a gripping fantasy intertwined with modern American and world politics, and even a fair share of modern astronomy as well. The author also provides links to resources for those who would like to immerse themselves even further in the facts behind the fiction. I much enjoyed this creative, fast-moving adventure. It left me yearning to learn more of the lore and the wisdom of the Irish saints, to visit Ireland, to appreciate more deeply traditional Catholic values and once long-held American standards of gentlemanly conduct and dress, and the desire to read Mr. Spring's next book!

End of capitalism’: Bolivia to expel Coca-Cola in wake of 2012 Mayan ‘apocalypse’

For most Americans, Bolivia is a third world South American country last robbed by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. However this impoverished nation is making headlines due to its Minister of External Affairs recent announcement that the Coca-Cola Company, one of the world’s largest corporations, is to be booted out of there by year’s end.

David Choquehuanca, the minister in question, explained that Coca-Cola will be expelled from Bolivia on the same day that the Mayan calendar enters a new cycle–December 21. According to Choquehuanca, the date marks the end of capitalism and the start of a culture of life in community-based societies. In order to celebrate that, Bolivia’s government is already planning a series of events that will take place at the Southern Hemisphere’s Summer Solstice on La Isla del Sol, one of the largest islands in Lake Titicaca.

“The twenty-first of December 2012 is the end of selfishness, of division. The twenty-first of December has to be the end of Coca-Cola and the beginning of mocochinche (a local peach-flavored soft drink),” Choquehuanca told reporters at a political rally for Bolivia’s president, Evo Morales. “The planets will line up after 26,000 years. It is the end of capitalism and the beginning of communitarianism,” he added.

It’s already been rumored that Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chavez, will follow suit, encouraging his country to ditch the American beverage for soft drinks produced locally.


 

It’s curious that Bolivia decided to forbid Coca-Cola in its territory, considering that one of the soft drink’s main ingredients is said to be coca extract (Coca-Cola refuses to confirm that, saying that this is part of their secret formula.)

Whether that is true or not, sales of coca leaf are big business in Bolivia, accounting for 2% of the country’s GDP, or approximately $270 million annually, and representing 14% of all agricultural sales. Besides, coca is legally sold in wholesale markets in some Bolivian cities. There’s even a cocaine bar in La Paz.

The decision of Coca-Cola’s ban in Bolivia came in a time when the country is pledging to legalize the consumption of coca leaves, which are notoriously processed clandestinely into cocaine, and were declared an illegal narcotic by the UN in 1961, along with cocaine, opium and morphine, in spite of its consumption being a centuries-old tradition there, strongly rooted in the beliefs of various indigenous groups.

“Neither the US nor capitalist countries have a good reason to maintain the ban on coca leaf consumption,” Morales has been quoted as saying.

Although it may make sense for them to ban Coca-Cola–which screams America and, therefore, capitalism–it’s not the first time that a US company had trouble to find ground in Bolivia. After trying for years to conquer Bolivians, McDonald’s withdrew from the country in the early 2000s for not being able to turn a profit there.

The fast-food giant failure was chronicled in the highly-tendentious documentary ‘Why McDonald’s Failed in Bolivia.’ The movie goes by referencing surveys, sociologists, nutritionists and historians, culminating with McDonald’s conclusion that their food wasn’t the issue, but a culturally driven boycott against American companies.

That wasn’t the case for Coca-Cola[/entity], though. According to the company’s annual report, its presence in Bolivia has grown considerably in the last few decades, as in the rest of South America. Since 2001 consumption of Coke products has more than tripled in Bolivia alone.

The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. Zecharia Sitchin, who writes fiction about the ancient Mesopotamian civilization of Sumer, claimed in several books (e.g., The Twelfth Planet, published in 1976) that he has found and translated Sumerian documents that identify the planet Nibiru, orbiting the Sun every 3600 years. These Sumerian fables include stories of “ancient astronauts” visiting Earth from a civilization of aliens called the Anunnaki.

Then Nancy Lieder, a self-declared psychic who claims she is channeling aliens, wrote on her website Zetatalk that the inhabitants of a fictional planet around the star Zeta Reticuli warned her that the Earth was in danger from Planet X or Nibiru. Only recently have these two fables been linked to the end of the Mayan long-count at the winter solstice in 2012 – hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. It has never happened and never will. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average.

As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway. But they falsely claim that a magnetic reversal is coming soon (in 2012) and that this is the same as, or will trigger a reversal of rotational poles.

I believe in the 2012 apocalypse

Apocalypse, as a vernacular term, originated from the Greek term "apocalypsis," which literally means “uncovering,” in the sense of revealing something. Until Hollywood filled our heads with images of tidal waves and meteors, the term was popularized through its Biblical use. This use carried a connotation that was subtler: The apocalypse referred to the uncovering of meaning or understanding hidden from mankind in a time or atmosphere dominated by falsehood and misconception.

Without even worrying about the Mayan calendar, the words of Nostradamus, the prophetic dreams of Daniel or the revelation made to John, I have taken the definition to heart and concluded that we have experienced the apocalypse. To say that we have spent the past decade or so in an atmosphere of falsehood and misconception doesn’t seem too farfetched. The numerous banking scandals and financial collapses; the extreme polarization and ethical scandals of politicians; the widespread rioting and protesting of people who feel betrayed and unrepresented by their leaders. Indeed, people the world over have been plagued by the consequence of an era governed by falsehoods and misconceptions.

2012 seems to be the year that many of those issues came to a head. A previously hidden (or perhaps just ignored) understanding that the derivation of the London Interbank Offered Rate is a vastly outdated method, based on a time when banks borrowed primarily from each other; that a unified European currency may have been a bad idea; that lending practices and calculation of risk have become too far removed from the consequences of their failure; and, most importantly, that the electorate, or even those citizens and residents denied the right to vote, will respond. The people of the world, from Syria to Oakland, have made their voices heard; from Occupy to the Arab Spring, even those who were previously disenfranchised, have stopped hiding their discontent and have brought about a vast reconsideration of the systems and forces governing our world.


 

To me, those are events of apocalyptic significance. I suppose much of that, though, is contingent on what we make of it all moving forward. When the Mayans made their now famous calendar, the end signified not that they had run out of space (thank you, Triangle), but that an apocalyptic cycle was coming to an end and that the future, the time beyond that date, would be a new world age. For John, too, the prophecy of an apocalypse was accompanied by transition from one age to another, the angels told him that the fall of Babylon — a city of sin, falsehoods and misconceptions of the good life — would be followed by the rise of a new Jerusalem. If we give the due significance to the events of 2012 and allow our eyes to be opened to the falsehoods and misconceptions that have directed many of our actions over the past decade; if we act upon the revelations of the past year and move into a new era, then we can say 2012 was the year of the apocalypse but also the year we collectively pulled our head out of the sand and began to fix and rebuild the systems we broke.

To take an optimistic stance, I’m going to label 2012 an apocalyptic year. Revelations were made, understandings uncovered and the conversations for “What now?” have started.

Perhaps it’s too generous to understand the apocalypse as the shifting of attitudes and understandings, or an awakening to the state of the world with far less fanfare and destruction than Nostradamus or John’s angels describe. So maybe there’s no role for Will Smith in the movie adaptation of 2012. But understanding the apocalypse this way transforms a wholly unrealistic concept into something not just possible, but meaningful.

What’s So Special About 2012?

The Maya inherited their basic calendrical information from the Olmecs who developed the Long Count between the second and first centuries BC. But as a matter of fact, there are several other independent sources that also mark 2012 as a conspicuous time.

- In the 1920s, a Seneca medicine man called Moses Shongo predicted that there would be a 25-year Earth purification period leading up to 2012.
- In the 1950s, a Native American called Reuben Silverbird had an out-of-body experience in which he predicted a rebirth experience in 2012.
- In the 1970s, the Chinese oracle, the I Ching was found by Terence McKenna to encode a fractal time wave that terminates late in 2012.
- In the 1980s, the Paqos, who are priests of the Q’ero tribe living high in the Andes in Peru, announced that their Pachakuti formula – the overturning of spacetime – would start in 1990 and last 22 years. Thus 2012 would bring the start of a Golden Age called Taripay Pacha, when the upper world, lower world and everyday world will unite.
All these other sources knew nothing of the Maya Long Count, so what can it all mean?

“Mystical experiences” such as
· hypnotic progression,
· out-of body experiences,
· near-death experiences,
· lucid dreams,
· remote viewing,
· alien abduction,
· meditative trance states
have all produced a certainty in some experiencers that 2012 is a time of special significance.

It seems that a clue may lie in human neurochemistry, since Terence McKenna accessed the information about 2012 when using an entheogenic mushroom, and the Maya used the same mushroom, which contains psilocybin – a compound closely related to dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Dr.Rick Strassman has recently confirmed that at birth, death, and during mystical experiences, the pineal gland in the centre of the human brain secretes DMT into the blood. So perhaps the Maya shamans, and the medicine men and priests of North and South America were able to activate the secretion of DMT (or achieve the same result using psilocybin or ayahuasca – a jungle brew containing DMT), and access some sort of global mega-mind - the developing consciousness of the Earth mother. After all, the 13-baktun cycle is a 260-unit cycle and thus a macroscopic version of the 260-day sacred Tzolkin calendar, which is based on the period of human gestation, so the 13-baktun cycle may measure a planetary gestation period of 5,125 years, which is the length of human civilization’s history. According to Peter Russell, there are 1010 molecules in a human neuron, and 1010 neurons in the human neo-cortex of the brain. The population of the Earth is currently over 109 and heading for 1010. When the critical number is approached, the parts lose their individual identities (“egos”) and become components of a larger whole. Thus the Earth is about to give birth to its own human neo-cortex, as we become human neurons in a global brain.


 

The 5,125-year 13-baktun cycle is exactly one eighth of the 41,000-year period of the “variation of obliquity” cycle (change in the angle of axis tilt) that is used to calculate ice-melt cycles. The baktun itself is 400 years long, which is the period of rotation of the Earth’s core, and thus invites the speculation that a geomagnetic reversal is on the cards for 2012. By many accounts, the Earth is overdue for a magnetic reversal, and although most geologists would say a reversal takes thousands of years, the Steens Mountain volcanic record indicates that the field can move at up to 6 degrees per day, meaning that a reversal could happen in only 30 days.

John Major Jenkins has made a strong case that the Maya were tracking the cycle of precession with their Long Count calendar. This is the 26,000-year cycle in which the Earth’s axis, which is 23.5 degrees off “vertical”, rotates in a circle, and is measured by the movement of constellations against the fixed positions of the rising equinox or solstice Sun. The winter solstice 2012 termination point of the 13-baktun cycle indicates a 36-year time window (1980 to 2016) in which the winter solstice Sun rises on the galactic equator. A Russian biochemist called Simon Shnoll has established that human biochemistry (and neurochemistry) is affected by the Earth’s orientation to the stars and by the sunspot cycle, (that is due to reach solar maximum in 2012), and another scientific paper published by James Spotiswoode indicates that psychic ability in humans increases massively when Galactic Centre is rising on the horizon.

So this Galactic Alignment process could indicate a time-window that will see the first examples of an altered humanity – some think that we can expect an increased telepathic ability, as seems to be the case with the “psychic children”. If a geomagnetic reversal is involved, or an electro-magnetic pulse wave, there is a possibility that the functioning of electronic devices would be compromised, and some say that humans would lose their memory, thus ending all conflict, since the reason for fighting would be forgotten. Others think that it could trigger mass out-of-body experiences or the rising of Kundalini – the fire serpent of Hindu lore that lies dormant at the base of the spine, and can, under special circumstances, rise up the spine to the brain, when ego is annihilated and enlightenment is achieved. This interpretation is reinforced by the recently published lost Aztec codex, The Pyramid of Fire, (see John Major Jenkins’ recent book of this name), in which the feathered serpent god, Quetzalcoatl-Kukulcan is revealed to be the same as Kundalini, and is directly connected with 2012.

There have been many speculations and theories about what 2012 may bring, and these can be generally grouped into the subheadings of catastrophic or ecstatic. All these theories are analysed in the forthcoming book, Beyond 2012: Catastrophe or Ecstasy, which is due out in February/March 2005.

With a cultural heritage including thousands of pyramids and temples, and a calendar that has proven itself to be astronomically accurate over millions of years, the Maya tradition is widely considered to be a mystic key to the soul of Turtle Island (North America).

In public talks and in a private interview, Mr. Barrios laid out his account of the history and future of the Americas, and the larger world, based on his understanding of the Mayan tradition as both an anthropologist and an initiate. He spoke also about the path he sees ahead from now until the Winter Solstice of 2012.

The range of teachings and insights offered by Mr. Barrios must be considered in the context of the realpolitik of his American homeland. The Maya of Guatemala, their pyramids, and their calendar have endured not in a new-age Shambhala of love and light, but in a milieu of treachery, beatings, torture, rape, and mass murder.

Decades of Darkness

For 30 long years right-wing Guatemalan governments ‹ supported both overtly and covertly by the US government ‹ waged a terrorist war against the people of the land, murdering over 200,000 citizens, many of them indigenous Mayan people.

When the war finally wound down in the 1990s, the United Nations Truth Commission conducted an 18-month investigation.* The UN found massive violations of human rights by the government of Guatemala with the complicity of the US government. The UN report stated that acts of "aggressive, racist and extremely cruel" violence descended to the level of genocide directed against the country's indigenous Mayan population.

When Amnesty International studied the Guatemalan situation in recent years, they came to an arresting conclusion. They wrote that real peace could come only through confronting Guatemala's "Corporate Mafia State."* They described this corporate Mafia state as an "unholy alliance" of certain national and international economic actors, who work alongside sectors of the police and military and common criminals to control Œblack¹ industries such as drugs, arms trafficking, money laundering, car theft rings, illegal adoptions, and kidnapping for ransom."

About the great dark shadow that has hung over the south-most part of Turtle Island, Mr. Barrios observes: "These injustices began five hundred years ago and continue to this very day in all the Americas. The Indian Wars have never ended...I think the power holders in the developed world see it as necessary to destroy the indigenous peoples, or at least to destroy their culture, because they are not Œconsumers.¹ The American Dream is built on the back of the Third World...But that is a false distinction for there is no Third World. There is only one world. We are all part of that one world, and we are all due respect."

While Guatemala has ostensibly been at peace for the last eight years, it is a disturbed peace. The war continues to have a residual impact on the people. Human rights violations still occur regularly, and even international human-rights monitors have been under threat.

Still, in the view of Mr. Barrios who came of age during the war, there have been improvements. "There are no armed guerillas, and the police and army are more decent, more respectful," he observed. "Because there is more human respect now, we can try to find a new life."

One eventual consequence of Guatemala¹s long-enduring climate of terrorism, has been mistrust and criticism. From this few are immune. Accusations are often aimed at people who purport to speak of the Mayan traditions. Mr. Barrios is enmeshed in this matrix of uncertainty. He criticizes others, and he is criticized himself.

The World will Not End

Carlos Barrios was born into a Spanish family on El Altiplano, the highlands of Guatemala. His home was in Huehuetenango, also the dwelling place of the Maya Mam tribe. With other Maya and other indigenous tradition keepers, the Mam carry part of the old ways on Turtle Island (North America). They are keepers of time, authorities on remarkable calendars that are ancient, elegant and relevant.

Mr. Barrios is a historian, an anthropologist and investigator. After studying with traditional elders for 25 years since the age of 19, he has also became a Mayan Ajq'ij, a ceremonial priest and spiritual guide, Eagle Clan.

Years ago, along with his brother, Gerardo, Carlos initiated an investigation into the different Mayan calendars. He studied with many teachers. He says his brother Gerardo interviewed nearly 600 traditional Mayan elders to widen their scope of knowledge.

"Anthropologists visit the temple sites," Mr. Barrios says, "and read the stelas and inscriptions and make up stories about the Maya, but they do not read the signs correctly. It¹s just their imagination...Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed. The indigenous have the calendars, and know how to accurately interpret it, not others."

The Calendars

Mayan comprehension of time, seasons, and cycles has proven itself to be vast and sophisticated. The Maya understand 17 different calendars, some of them charting time accurately over a span of more than ten million years.

The calendar that has steadily drawn global attention since 1987 is called the Tzolk'in or Cholq'ij. Devised ages ago and based on the cycle of the Pleiades, it is still held as sacred

With the indigenous calendars, native people have kept track of important turning points in history. For example, the daykeepers who study the calendars identified an important day in the year One Reed, Ce Acatal, as it was called by the Mexica. That was the day when an important ancestor was prophesied to return, "coming like a butterfly."

In the western calendar, the One Reed date correlates to Easter Sunday, April 21, 1519 ‹ the day that Hernando Cortez and his fleet of 11 Spanish galleons arrived from the East at what is today called Vera Cruz, Mexico. When the Spanish ships came toward shore, native people were waiting and watching to see how it would go. The billowing sails of the ships did indeed remind the scouts of butterflies skimming the ocean surface.

In this manner was a new era initiated, an era they had anticipated through their calendars. The Maya termed the new era the Nine Bolomtikus, or Nine Hells of 52 years each. As the nine cycles unfolded, land and freedom were taken from the native people. Disease and disrespect dominated.

What began with the arrival of Cortez, lasted until August 16, 1987 ­ a date many people recall as Harmonic Convergence. Millions of people took advantage of that date to make ceremony in sacred sites, praying for a smooth transition to a new era, the World of the Fifth Sun.

From that 1987 date until now, Mr. Barrios says, we have been in a time when the right arm of the materialistic world is disappearing, slowly but inexorably. We are at the cusp of the era when peace begins, and people live in harmony with Mother Earth. We are no longer in the World of the Fourth Sun, but we are not yet in the World of the Fifth Sun. This is the time in-between, the time of transition.

As we pass through transition there is a colossal, global convergence of environmental destruction, social chaos, war, and ongoing Earth changes. All this, Mr. Barrios says, was foreseen via the simple, spiral mathematics of the Mayan calendars.

"It will change," Mr. Barrios observes. "Everything will change." He said Mayan Daykeepers view the Dec. 21, 2012 date as a rebirth, the start of the World of the Fifth Sun. It will be the start of a new era resulting from ‹ and signified by ‹ the solar meridian crossing the galactic equator, and the earth aligning itself with the center of the galaxy.

At sunrise on December 21, 2012 ‹ for the first time in 26,000 years ‹ the Sun rises to conjunct the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. This cosmic cross is considered to be an embodiment of the Sacred Tree, The Tree of Life ‹ a tree remembered in all the world¹s spiritual traditions.

Some observers say this alignment with the heart of the galaxy in 2012 will open a channel for cosmic energy to flow through the earth, cleansing it and all that dwells upon it, raising all to a higher level of vibration. This process has already begun, Mr. Barrios suggested. "Change is accelerating now, and it will continue to accelerate."

If the people of the earth can get to this 2012 date in good shape, without having destroyed too much of the Earth, Mr. Barrios said, we will rise to a new, higher level. But to get there we must transform enormously powerful forces that seek to block the way.

A Picture of the Road Ahead

From his understanding of the Mayan tradition and the calendars, Mr. Barrios offered a picture of where we are at and what may lie on the road ahead:

… The date specified in the calendar ‹ Winter Solstice in the year 2012 ‹ does not mark the end of the world. Many outside people writing about the Mayan calendar sensationalize this date, but they do not know. The ones who know are the indigenous elders who are entrusted with keeping the tradition.

… "Humanity will continue," he contends, "but in a different way. Material structures will change. From this we will have the opportunity to be more human."

… We are living in the most important era of the Mayan calendars and prophecies. All the prophecies of the world, all the traditions, are converging now. There is no time for games. The spiritual ideal of this era is action.

… Many powerful souls have reincarnated in this era, with a lot of power. This is true on both sides, the light and the dark. High magic is at work on both sides.

… Things will change, but it is up to the people how difficult or easy it is for the changes to come about.

… The economy now is a fiction. The first five-year stretch of transition ‹ from August 1987 to August 1992 ‹ was the beginning of the destruction of the material world. We have progressed ten years deeper into the transition phase by now, and many of the so-called sources of financial stability are in fact hollow.

… The banks are weak. This is a delicate moment for them. They could crash globally if we don¹t pay attention. One critical period is October and November 2002. If the banks crash in these months then we will be forced to rely on the land and our skills. The monetary systems will be in chaos, and we must then rely on our direct relationship with the Earth for our food and shelter.

… The North and South Poles are both breaking up. The level of the water in the oceans is going to rise. But at the same time land in the ocean, especially near Cuba, is also going to rise.

A Call for Fusion

As he met with audiences in Santa Fe, Mr. Barrios told a story about the most recent Mayan New Year ceremonies in Guatemala. He said that one respected Mam elder, who lives all year in a solitary mountain cave, journeyed to Chichicastenango to speak with the people at the ceremony.

The elder delivered a simple, direct message. He called for human beings to come together in support of life and light. Right now each person and group is going his or her own way. The elder of the mountains said there is hope if the people of the light can come together and unite in some way.


 

Reflecting on this, Mr. Barrios explained: "We live in a world of polarity: day and night, man and woman, positive and negative. Light and darkness need each other. They are a balance. Just now the dark side is very strong, and very clear about what they want. They have their vision and their priorities clearly held, and also their hierarchy. They are working in many ways so that we will be unable to connect with the spiral Fifth World in 2012."

"On the light side everyone thinks they are the most important, that their own understandings, or their group¹s understandings, are the key. There¹s a diversity of cultures and opinions, so there is competition, diffusion, and no single focus."

As Mr. Barrios sees it, the dark side works to block fusion through denial and materialism. It also works to destroy those who are working with the light to get the Earth to a higher level. They like the energy of the old, declining Fourth World, the materialism. They do not want it to change. They do not want fusion. They want to stay at this level, and are afraid of the next level.

The dark power of the declining Fourth World cannot be destroyed or overpowered. It¹s too strong and clear for that, and that is the wrong strategy. The dark can only be transformed when confronted with simplicity and open-heartedness. This is what leads to fusion, a key concept for the World of the Fifth Sun.

Mr. Barrios said the emerging era of the Fifth Sun will call attention to a much-overlooked element. Whereas the four traditional elements of earth, air, fire and water have dominated various epochs in the past, there will be a fifth element to reckon with in the time of the Fifth Sun: ether.

The dictionary defines ether as the rarefied element of the Heavens. Ether is a medium. It permeates all space and transmits waves of energy in a wide range of frequencies, from cell phones to human auras. What is "ethereal" is related to the regions beyond earth: the heavens.

Ether ‹ the element of the Fifth Sun ‹ is celestial and lacking in material substance, but is no less real than wood, stone or flesh.

"Within the context of ether there can be a fusion of the polarities," Mr. Barrios said. "No more darkness or light in the people, but an uplifted fusion. But right now the realm of darkness is not interested in this. They are organized to block it. They seek to unbalance the Earth and its environment so we will be unready for the alignment in 2012. We need to work together for peace, and balance with the other side. We need to take care of the Earth that feeds and shelters us. We need to put our entire mind and heart into pursuing unity and fusion now, to confront the other side and preserve life."

To be Ready for this Moment in History

Mr. Barrios told his audiences in Santa Fe that we are at a critical moment of world history. "We are disturbed," he said. "We can¹t play anymore. Our planet can be renewed or ravaged. Now is the time to awaken and take action."

"Everyone is needed. You are not here for no reason. Everyone who is here now has an important purpose. This is a hard, but a special time. We have the opportunity for growth, but we must be ready for this moment in history."

Mr. Barrios offered a number of suggestions to help people walk in balance through the years ahead. "The prophesized changes are going to happen," he said, "but our attitude and actions determine how harsh or mild they are."

… We need to act, to make changes, and to elect people to represent us who understand and who will take political action to respect the earth. Meditation and spiritual practice are good, but also action.

… It¹s very important to be clear about who you are, and also about your relation to the Earth.

… Develop yourself according to your own tradition and the call of your heart. But remember to respect differences, and strive for unity.

… Eat wisely. A lot of food is corrupt in either subtle or gross ways. Pay attention to what you are taking into your body.

… Learn to preserve food, and to conserve energy.

… Learn some good breathing techniques, so you have mastery of your breath.

… Be clear. Follow a tradition with great roots. It is not important what tradition, your heart will tell you, but it must have great roots.

… We live in a world of energy. An important task at this time is to learn to sense or see the energy of everyone and everything: people, plants, animals. This becomes increasingly important as we draw close to the World of the Fifth Sun, for it is associated with the element ether ­ the realm where energy lives and weaves.

… Go to the sacred places of the earth to pray for peace, and respect for the Earth which gives us our food, clothing, and shelter. We need to reactivate the energy of these sacred places. That is our work.

… According to Mr. Barrios¹ reading of the Mayan calendar, if war happens in November 2002 or after, then it¹s bad, but not catastrophic. But if it happens between April and November 2003, it will be catastrophic. Really bad. It could eventually result in the death of two-thirds of humanity. "So stay active," he said. "If we are active, we can transform the planet. The elders watch to see what happens."

… Many Mayan elders and knowledge keepers may be eliminated in the next few years. For the first half of the current Katun (20-year period) the dark side has a lot of power. But that will pass 3 to 4 years from now. The tide can turn. Amazing things are going to happen.

… One simple but effective prayer technique is to light a white or baby-blue colored candle. Think a moment in peace. Speak your intention to the flame and send the light of it on to the leaders who have the power to make war or peace.

We Have Work to Do

According to Mr. Barrios this is a crucially important moment for humanity, and for earth. Each person is important. If you have incarnated into this era, you have spiritual work to do balancing the planet.

He said the elders have opened the doors so that other races can come to the Mayan world to receive the tradition. The Maya have long appreciated and respected that there are other colors, other races, and other spiritual systems. "They know," he said, "that the destiny of the Mayan world is related to the destiny of the whole world."

"The greatest wisdom is in simplicity," Mr. Barrios advised before leaving Santa Fe. "Love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, forgiveness. It¹s not complex or elaborate. The real knowledge is free. It¹s encoded in your DNA. All you need is within you. Great teachers have said that from the beginning. Find your heart, and you will find your way."

Is it possible to predict the future by studying the past? Our ancestors believed that destiny cannot be altered. Whatever is meant to happen, will happen. At present, many of us are focusing on the year of 2012. What is so special about that particular year? Will our current world be destroyed or will we perhaps experience a transformation of some kind?

According to ancient records and beliefs, at least four marvelous worlds have already been destroyed due to global cataclysms in the past. During the last great cosmic catastrophe that occurred ten to twelve thousand years ago, the cosmic body that passed the Earth caused dramatic and severe climate changes. A poleshift led to the extinction of millions of life forms, humans, animals, and plants on Earth.
The ancients studied the stars and the Sun because they believed the future could be predicted by examining the past. It was considered that time itself was linked to the cyclic movements of the Earth through the heavens. Many advanced ancient civilizations developed precessional calendars, which were 25,776 years in duration. A precessional cycle comprises of the 2,160-year ages of the Zodiac. The precessional calendars of our ancestors predicted the destruction of the old world and re-birth of a new world, as well as the return of the star gods.
The ancients' myths of the previous worlds are striking similar. Our ancestors' calendars were also very advanced. This indicates that the ancient people shared the same memories and must have received their astronomical knowledge from the same source, the alien gods.
Let us take a brief look at what some of our ancestors had to say about the past ages.

Destroyed Worlds

The Native American tribes wisdom of the past world epochs is impressive. The Hopi Indians, an American culture consisting of about 5,000 inhabitants living in Arizona tell of worlds, which have all been destroyed by various cataclysms. Each of these worlds could be considered as a cycle of civilization. According to the Hopi we are currently living in the fourth world. The previous worlds were brought to an end by fire, a poleshift, and flooding.

"The first world was destroyed, as a punishment for human misdemeanors, by an all-consuming fire that came from above and below. The second world ended when the terrestrial globe toppled from its axis and everything was covered with ice. The third world ended in a universal flood."

The Aztecs were convinced that the world went through several ages called Suns. Each Sun lasted a specific time and at the end of the period, the world was destroyed in a cataclysmic event.

One of the most famous and precious Aztec artifacts is the great "Sun Stone". This fascinating object, which is a good proof of the ancients' astronomical knowledge, represents the four great suns of Aztec history. The Aztecs believed the world went through four creations and destruction's. Each sun depicted on the Sun Stone is a period identified with a certain event that ended it. The Aztecs believed the first world belonged to the giants who died because of hunger. What caused the starvation? Was it perhaps a change of the climate, a drought? The second sun was ended by strong wind and the third sun was destroyed because of quakes, storms, and rain of fiery ashes. Finally, water ended the fourth sun, thus the Great Flood. We are now living in the fifth sun, which is characterized by great wars and diseases. It is said that earthquakes will end this world.

Another clue to the cosmogony of the Aztecs is a valuable document called the "Codex Vaticanus". According to this paper, there were four ages of the world preceding the present one.
The Codex Vaticanus offers the following history of mankind:

"First Sun, 'Matlactli Atl': duration 4,008 years. Those who lived then ate water maize called 'atzitzintli'. In this age lived the giants... The First Sun was destroyed by water in the sign 'Matlactli Atl' (Ten Water). It was called 'Apachiohualiztli'(flood, deluge), the art of sorcery of the permanent rain. Men were turned into fish. Some say that only one couple escaped, protected by an old tree living near the water. Others say that there were seven couples who hid in a cave until the flood was over and the waters had gone down. They repopulated the Earth and were worshipped as gods in their nations...
Second Sun, 'Ehecoatl': duration 4,010 years. Those who lived then ate wild fruit known as 'acotzintli'. This Sun was destroyed by Ehecoatl (Winged Serpent) and men were turned into monkeys... One man and one woman, standing on a rock, were saved from destruction...
Third Sun, 'Tleyquiyahuillo': duration 4,081 years. Men, the descendents of the couple who were saved from the Second Sun, ate a fruit called 'tzincoacoc'. This Third Sun was destroyed by fire...
Fourth Sun, Tzontlilic: duration 5,026 years. Men died of starvation after a deluge of blood and fire..."

The Aztecs called the fifth sun, "The Sun of Movement". This period in our history will end as a result of the Earth's movement. Unfortunately, the Aztecs did not provide us with any date of the ending of the current world.

The Mayas, who were excellent astronomers, developed a calendar based on the cycle of the Pleiades. According to the Mayas, time operates in great cycles of creation and destruction. These cycles have duration of 5,125 years. The Mayas predict that the end of this world will begin at the end of the next great cosmic cycle, on December 21-23, 2012.
There are of course some objections to these claims. For one thing, we cannot dismiss the possibility that although the Mayas were great astronomers, they could have miscalculated the date. A number of people, including some of the Mayan elders believe that the year 2012 is not a doomsday date, but represents rather a time of transformation. During this transition period, our world will experience environmental destructions, wars, and many Earth changes. The year 2012 should be considered as a date of re-birth, the start of the "World of the Fifth Sun".
Interesting to note is, how could the Mayas have possibly known what the conditions would be like at this point in our history, as we head towards December, 2012?

According to Hindu beliefs, everything has an end and a new beginning. Nothing is eternal, not even the gods themselves. Time is cyclical, and the creation is a continuous re-creation process. The Vedic scriptures divide the history of humankind into four epochs, or world "yugas" (ages). The first world epoch, the Krita yuga, which was most perfect of all ages lasted for 4,800 divine years. One divine year corresponds to as much as 360 human years. Thus, the Krita yuga lasted 1,728,000 human years. The gods' extremely long lifespan was often considered a sign of immortality.
In the Holy Bible it is written:

2 Peter 3
WITH THE LORD, A DAY IS LIKE A THOUSAND YEARS AND A THOUSAND YEARS ARE LIKE A DAY.

The next world epoch, the Treta yuga lasted 3,600 divine years, meaning 1,296,000 human years. Then followed the Dvapara yuga. This era lasted 2,400 divine years, 864,000 human years. The Hindu people believe that we are currently living in the yuga of "Kali", the Goddess of Destruction. During the various epochs, all the worshipped yuga deities have a different color. Do the colors merely have a symbolic meaning, or has our planet, during every world epoch, been assigned to an extraterrestrial being, a god, whose primary task was to control and guard the Earth?
This present age, the Kali yuga will be the shortest of all the four ages. It will last only 1,200 divine years, 432,000 human years. Characteristic for this world age are natural disasters and tyrannical rulers.

Some cultures count with more than five previous worlds. For example, we learn from a Hebrew tradition called "Shmi Tot" that life on our planet has been destroyed six times before. We are currently living in the seventh creation. A Jewish legend tells:

"Nor is this world inhabited by man the first of things Earthly created by God. He made several worlds before ours, but he destroyed them all."

Each of the previous worlds was destroyed in a cataclysm. The Jews believe that the world exists in cycles, each lasting seven thousand years. The ending of a cycle is considered a transformation.
The ancient Greeks on the other hand had accounts of five different races, which inhabited Earth during various ages.

One of the greatest problems with the calculation of the approaching end of the world is the fact that the starting points of world calendars differ. The Jewish calendar begins at the supposed date of the creation of the world, 3,761 B.C. The Greek calendar starts 776 B.C., when the first Olympiad began. The Roman calendar begins 753 B.C., this is the date of the foundation of Rome. The starting point of the Islamic calendar is 622 A.D., the year in which Mohammed left Mecca, and the Christian calendar begins with the birth of Jesus Christ.
This means that those who believe that the world will end 2012 should consider what this year means in relation to the various world calendars.

An ending brought to our world caused by a celestial body is also described in the Holy Bible. Revelation repeatedly refers to a cosmic catastrophe and Ezekiel tells that during the End of Days fire and brimstone will fall from the skies, and there will be great earthquakes, plagues, and wars.

Revelation 6:12-14
6:12 And I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the whole moon became as blood; 6:13 and the stars of the heaven fell unto the earth, as a fig tree casteth her unripe figs when she is shaken of a great wind. 6:14 And the heaven was removed as a scroll when it is rolled up; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

The Bible does not provide us with a date when this disaster will occur. The only warning we have is that these events begin with the return of anti-Christ.

We know that human evolution passes through a serious of amazing transformations. Worlds are destroyed on periodical and cyclical basis. Our present world and we, humans are a bridge between past and future, as I explain in my book.

When will the next cycle occur? When will the extraterrestrial kingdoms return to Earth? When will the alien gods visit us again? The key to our future lies hidden in the past…

"First Sun, 'Matlactli Atl': duration 4,008 years. Those who lived then ate water maize called 'atzitzintli'. In this age lived the giants... Fourth Sun, Tzontlilic: duration 5,026 years. Men died of starvation after a deluge of blood and fire..."

The Aztecs called the fifth sun, "The Sun of Movement". This period in our history will end as a result of the Earth's movement. Unfortunately, the Aztecs did not provide us with any date of the ending of the current world.

The Mayas, who were excellent astronomers, developed a calendar based on the cycle of the Pleiades. According to the Mayas, time operates in great cycles of creation and destruction. These cycles have duration of 5,125 years. The Mayas predict that the end of this world will begin at the end of the next great cosmic cycle, on December 21-23, 2012.
There are of course some objections to these claims. For one thing, we cannot dismiss the possibility that although the Mayas were great astronomers, they could have miscalculated the date. A number of people, including some of the Mayan elders believe that the year 2012 is not a doomsday date, but represents rather a time of transformation. During this transition period, our world will experience environmental destructions, wars, and many Earth changes. The year 2012 should be considered as a date of re-birth, the start of the "World of the Fifth Sun".
Interesting to note is, how could the Mayas have possibly known what the conditions would be like at this point in our history, as we head towards December, 2012?

According to Hindu beliefs, everything has an end and a new beginning. Nothing is eternal, not even the gods themselves. Time is cyclical, and the creation is a continuous re-creation process. The Vedic scriptures divide the history of humankind into four epochs, or world "yugas" (ages). The first world epoch, the Krita yuga, which was most perfect of all ages lasted for 4,800 divine years. One divine year corresponds to as much as 360 human years. Thus, the Krita yuga lasted 1,728,000 human years. The gods' extremely long lifespan was often considered a sign of immortality.
In the Holy Bible it is written:

2 Peter 3
WITH THE LORD, A DAY IS LIKE A THOUSAND YEARS AND A THOUSAND YEARS ARE LIKE A DAY.

The next world epoch, the Treta yuga lasted 3,600 divine years, meaning 1,296,000 human years. Then followed the Dvapara yuga. This era lasted 2,400 divine years, 864,000 human years. The Hindu people believe that we are currently living in the yuga of "Kali", the Goddess of Destruction. During the various epochs, all the worshipped yuga deities have a different color. Do the colors merely have a symbolic meaning, or has our planet, during every world epoch, been assigned to an extraterrestrial being, a god, whose primary task was to control and guard the Earth?
This present age, the Kali yuga will be the shortest of all the four ages. It will last only 1,200 divine years, 432,000 human years. Characteristic for this world age are natural disasters and tyrannical rulers.

Some cultures count with more than five previous worlds. For example, we learn from a Hebrew tradition called "Shmi Tot" that life on our planet has been destroyed six times before. We are currently living in the seventh creation. A Jewish legend tells:

"Nor is this world inhabited by man the first of things Earthly created by God. He made several worlds before ours, but he destroyed them all."

Each of the previous worlds was destroyed in a cataclysm. The Jews believe that the world exists in cycles, each lasting seven thousand years. The ending of a cycle is considered a transformation.
The ancient Greeks on the other hand had accounts of five different races, which inhabited Earth during various ages.

One of the greatest problems with the calculation of the approaching end of the world is the fact that the starting points of world calendars differ. The Jewish calendar begins at the supposed date of the creation of the world, 3,761 B.C. The Greek calendar starts 776 B.C., when the first Olympiad began. The Roman calendar begins 753 B.C., this is the date of the foundation of Rome. The starting point of the Islamic calendar is 622 A.D., the year in which Mohammed left Mecca, and the Christian calendar begins with the birth of Jesus Christ.
This means that those who believe that the world will end 2012 should consider what this year means in relation to the various world calendars.

An ending brought to our world caused by a celestial body is also described in the Holy Bible. Revelation repeatedly refers to a cosmic catastrophe and Ezekiel tells that during the End of Days fire and brimstone will fall from the skies, and there will be great earthquakes, plagues, and wars.

Revelation 6:12-14
6:12 And I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the whole moon became as blood; 6:13 and the stars of the heaven fell unto the earth, as a fig tree casteth her unripe figs when she is shaken of a great wind. 6:14 And the heaven was removed as a scroll when it is rolled up; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

The Bible does not provide us with a date when this disaster will occur. The only warning we have is that these events begin with the return of anti-Christ.

We know that human evolution passes through a serious of amazing transformations. Worlds are destroyed on periodical and cyclical basis. Our present world and we, humans are a bridge between past and future, as I explain in my book.

When will the next cycle occur? When will the extraterrestrial kingdoms return to Earth? When will the alien gods visit us again? The key to our future lies hidden in the past…

2012: Is It True?

Just in the past two years, there have been two great earthquakes that have devastated populated areas and many other smaller ones that have also done great damage, the Amazon has virtually dried up, the Arctic has begun to melt, the Greenland and Antarctic ice caps have become unstable, and the weather has turned into a complex monster.
What is so interesting about this is that our planet is not the only one in the solar system that appears to be affected. There have been signs of unusual weather on Saturn, and Mars appears to be experiencing polar cap decline not dissimilar to our own.

Now a scientific paper has been published suggesting that increased solar activity over the past decade has resulted in the sun contributing anywhere from ten to thirty percent of the additional heat that's going into global warming.

In fact, it doesn't just suggest this, it goes a long way toward proving it. This will be taken by some people to mean that we needn't bother about global warming because it's the sun's fault. But, of course, it's not ALL the sun's fault and we can and must do something about the part that's our fault. The truth is that the added impact of solar heating makes the problem incredibly urgent. This planet's whole natural process is about to go into chaos, and when it does potentially billions of us are going to die, and the most vulnerable areas are the United States, Europe and China, so we Americans cannot expect to sit on the sidelines while the rest of the world suffers for our sins.

Anybody who doesn't burn to do something about the global warming problem is insane, and leaders who won't address it are in the process right now of committing the greatest crime against humanity that history has ever known.

When I worked on Superstorm, there were no models that factored in increased heating from the sun. But it's there all right, and therein lies the making of a catastrophe not unlike that prophesied as the end of the age, according to Jose Arguelles, by Pacal Votan, a Mayan ruler of the sixth century A.D.

I am beginning to see around me evidence that this man's prophecy was correct. Why that would be so is another matter entirely, and one that I cannot address except with speculation, but I can say that, if things keep deteriorating at the present rate, there are going to be environmental disasters of unprecedented ferocity in a few years, and I would not be surprised if they weren't upon us right around 2012.

There is no question at all that an age is coming to its end right now. In the past couple of years, the problems have become so obvious that they are very hard to ignore. The sun is more active than it has been in a thousand years. The magnetic pole is showing signs of a shift. Storms are becoming more frequent and catastrophic. Human pressure on the planet's natural functioning is rapidly overwhelming its ability to stay alive. Earth is dying.

And then there are the earthquakes and the subtle suggestions that great volcanic events might be impending. There are things nobody really understands, such as the hot spot east of Santa Barbara, California, and the signs of activity beneath some of the world's supervolcanoes.

The earthquakes are the strangest phenomenon. Why are they happening now? Are they in some way related to solar activity? If so, it's not something that our own science understands. We even have trouble understanding if there is a connection between earthquakes that take place in close time proximity but on unrelated faults.

There was a book published some years ago called Hamlet's Mill that suggested that much ancient symbolism was an attempt to warn the far future that earth every so often, perhaps on a regular cycle of about 12,500 years, went into a state of chaos.

Subsequent to the publication of this book, we have come to know that there was a complex series of cataclysms on this planet around 12,500 years ago, that led to the collapse of the world's then extensive glaciation and the beginning of the interglacial in which we have spent our entire recorded history.

There is all sort of evidence, commented upon by many authors, notably Rand and Rose Flem-Ath and Graham Hancock, to the effect that some sort of past civilization, advanced in ways that are hard for us to apprehend, was utterly destroyed during this time.

Sea levels rose fantastically during the glacial melt, and they rose fast, increasing hundreds of feet over just a few centuries. Nowadays, we live in what would have been the highlands of that period. Gigantic stretches of land that were present in those days now are gone. And there are suggestions, here and there, that there might be inundated cities and other structures, now far from land. But underwater archaeology is in its infancy, and geology has not produced more than a rough idea of where shorlines lay during the last glaciation. Add to that the probability that earthquakes have further altered landforms, and the chances of proveably detecting any unquestionable remains of even quite a large civilization become remote.

Nevertheless, in memory and in prophecy, we do have indications that this civilization was once there, and that it has tried to send warning forward.

We are living in the time it identified as the next age of chaos, and we would do well to acknowledge that fact as they did in their time, in order to do what they did, which is to project some remnant of what we have accomplished and what wisdom we have gained forward into the next human age.

It is fair to ask, then, what is to be done? I'm not a survivalist and I'm not going to recommend the purchase of flashlights and seeds. Time and chance will capture us all, and it will be a matter of luck and the moving finger on the wall who survives and who does not.

Best that we humbly acknowledge that, somehow, the past had possession of extremely potent knowledge. It's demonstrable: Mayan texts do identify 2012 as an epochal year; and the environment is disintegrating in ways that suggest that this prediction, made over a thousand years ago by a man who didn't even have use of the wheel, is perhaps the most potent human idea formed in all of our history. If he is correct, then it's not difficult to argue that his was the best mind that ever lived, at least during this particular cycle.

For nearly three million years, earth has been rocked by climactic instability. The periodic nature of ice ages suggests that the sun heats up over a vast cycle of thousands of years, causing the release of greenhouse gasses through natural means, resulting in a spike in air temperature that violently melts the ice and ushers in another interglacial when the sun suddenly changes and cools down again.

This gigantic solar cycle must exist now, but it has not always existed. Actually, the earth has spent huge, unimaginably long epochs in a condition of stability unlike anything we have known across the entire history of our development. During many of these periods, there were no polar caps, and life evolved slowly, impelled by the competition for living space into the myriad of forms and survival strategies that we see around us today.

For the past three million years, though, the opposite has been true. The continuous cycle of cooling and heating that the planet is now undergoing has wrought havoc in nature. The number of species has been in decline for that entire period, and has just now reached the peak of the bell curve. We will see a phenomenal dieoff in the next few years, a massive collapse in the number of life forms on the planet.

The extinction event that created us, in other words, is about to challenge our very existence.

It's not as if it hasn't happened before. In fact, every time there was a gigantic climate change, the primates reacted by adapting themselves anew to changed conditions. Were it not for the instability of the present situation, we would never have become an intelligent species.

Now, that intelligence must be called upon again, to get us through to the next period of relative calm. During this period, we will leave behind virtually everything we now understand as civilization. The consumer society will be the first to go, a victim of overpopulation and our failure to address the need to find new energy sources early enough. With it will go the United States as superpower. We are already in the last phases of that: like the British Empire in 1910, our country is overwhelmed with debt and beginning to treat the restless in its client states with extraordinary brutality. Next will be some cataclysm, perhaps the unexpected collapse of Saudi oil or the detonation of atomic bombs in our cites or a great plague--who knows what it will be--but on the other side of it, the world will no longer be dominated by a superpower.

At the same time and consequent to the fall of the superpower, will come a period of climate change so rapid that growing seasons worldwide will be disrupted at the same time that the large scale movement of food around the planet becomes problematic due to a lack of energy resources. This is likely to mean sickness and famine on a very broad scale, especially in areas that are not self sufficient in food.

It's not a pretty picture, and the failure of human leadership worldwide just at the time when creative innovation at the top was most essential has condemned us to vast suffering.

So, why don't I just go ahead and fall on my sword or put a gun to my head?

Because I am optimistic about the future, and I have good reason to be.

At the same time that all of these negative forces are gathering and arraying themselves against us like some kind of dark army of invincible soldiers with the monstrous weapons of the apocalypse, all aimed straight at our hearts, the mind of man is responding in ways that are so far beyond what we presently realize that they beggar description.

However, we are on a collision course with two destinies: the planet is about to throw us off like a horse switching its tail at a persisten dobson fly, while at the same time we are on the point of making a series of phenomenal scientific breakthroughs that may finally take the mind in the direction it has been trying to go ever since we looked up and saw the stars, which is outside of the body, into the surrounding world and universe, into total knowledge, total freedom and a future so fantastic that what we will be in fifty years will be so radically different from what we are now that we will be all but unrecognizable to ourselves.

If we live.

This has happened before. During the latter stages of the dinosaur age, the climate entered an unstable phase as well, which lasted about three million years before a the great cataclysm that delivered the coup de grace. During this time, the number of dinosaur species gradually declined, and highly intelligent--by dinosaur standards--new species such as Struthomimus--evolved. This fast, smart little beast came about as a response to a consistently challenging climate.

In modern (by geologic standards) times, the mammals responded to our own climate challenge by evolving another highly intelligent species--us. But we're a much better contender than Stuthomimus, and for a very specfic reason: we are intelligent enough and informed enough to induce further, even more rapid evolution in ourselves, and perhaps save ourselves and even our civilization, from the coming upheaval.

Indeed, I don't believe that a changing environment is actually our greatest enemy. Our greatest enemy is a part of nature that lies concealed within us. It is the death wish that arises out of excessive population pressure. This death wish began to be triggered a long time ago, in the middle of the eighteenth century, when a restlessness swept europe as cities grew in population, crowding and filthiness. By the middle of the nineteenth century, there had been two major revolutions, the French in the 1780s and the upheaval of the 1840s. In the United States in the 1860s, the first war of population destruction was fought. And then, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the firing of a single bullet into the brain of an archduke in Bosnia turned on a killing machine that we had invented in the form of the European arms race that had unfolded from 1890 through 1914.

That killing machine, started by that single bullet, has never since been turned off. It is directly responsible for the rise of communism and Naziism and the massive avalanche of death that they brought to this world. Indeed, I could take you, event by event, from that bullet to the latest death in Iraq and show you just how direct and unbroken that chain really is.

I could take you, also, through the wicked hell of opposing ideologies that keep the machine running, and show you how a larger sense of enmity, expressed again and again as a desire to enter one utopian condition or another, has been threatening man from within even as the environment threatens us from without.

But this is not a history lesson. It is about what lies ahead, because the machinery of death might at last coming to pieces, and, if it does, then the human mind is going to spring free, and there will be wonders.

A confluence of scientific discoveries holds almost immeasurable promise for us. We are in the position, probably for the first time in any of the cycles we have lived through, of taking possession of our own evolution, and therefore also of the nature that now controls our lives with its dangers, its arbitrary cycles, and its indifferent casting of species after species down into death.

Biological and informational technologies are about to come together in ways that are beyond startling, that suggest that we may finally leap free of the bondage of the death wish and all the silly superstitions and ideologies that flow out of it, from the myth of the good communist to the myth of the superman to the myth of the free market, to leave it all behind, and along with it the religious and social superstitions that drive our ideologies on the ash-heap of failed ideas and false gods.

As our ability to create ever more dense information nodes is increasing exponentially, so also is our ability to deliver information to the brain, and to alter ourselves in ways that enable us to process it with greater efficiency.

And this is only one of many areas in which science is progressing toward the exact sort of post-apocalyptic human state that has been prophesied, that we will reach superconciousness even as the world falls apart around us.

It turns out that our approaching this state isn't connected with some sort of magic at all, any more than the spirit hole through which Pacal Votan said that he would speak was woven of an incomprehensible magic. Just as ordinary science is going to make the magic of the superconscious human being a reality, it was that hole that enabled archaeologists to discover Pacal Votan's tomb, and bring his existence back to light.

Magic, when you understand it, is no longer magic, and we are rapidly reaching the ideal human condition, which is one in which the average person is too smart to believe in the deadly superstitions and ideologies that claw at us like evil trolls trying to prevent us from fulfilling our destiny, which is to take flight and fill the universe with human mind, human spirit and human being.

2012 - The Moment of Transformation - The End of Time

The word is spreading about 2012, and is likely to keep spreading in the years to come. In several prophetic traditions that are already well known, and in others that are coming to light, the years 2011 and 2012 appear again and again as the End of Time, when sweeping changes are expected to transform all of human consciousness, lifting and accelerating it into new and "higher"states of spiritual awareness and action.

On a planet that has yet to catch up with what Einstein and Planck wrote about 100 years ago, and with the main premise of quantum theory -- that the universe is composed not of solid "realities" of matter, but of frequencies of energy -- and that continues to doubt the infinite creative power of the individual mind, much less of many minds united in the "100th Monkey" paradigm, it's inevitable that most of the early air and scare about 2012 emphasizes the cataclysmic Earth changes that some expect to see, and the profound dislocation of human life in all areas: physical, social, political, economic, cultural. For those who are more interested in the symptoms than in the root thought, these fearful interpretations of the End of Time as "the end of the world" (imagine here the appropriate sound effects of screams, thunder, flames and the trump of doom) naturally evoke the imagery of the last days from Revelations and other sources: natural disasters, war, plague and every other horribly painful thing that fear propagandists can cook up, and their audience can imagine.

The actuality is different. The End of Time does not mean The Horrific Destruction of Everything We Love. It means a change in the nature of time itself, or more likely a change in the way we perceive time as no longer a kind of fluid medium that we live in, like water, or that we move along like a racetrack with birth at the starting block and death at the finish line. Rather, the change is likely to be a more proactive relationship with time as one of the art forms that conscious beings create, and that we therefore have the power to change. In other words, time will no longer be something we suffer passively. It will be something that we create and use to our advantage, for the purposes of our individual and collective soul evolution.

Thus some of those who've theorized about this -- and we'll get to a few examples soon -- speculate that in 2012 we evolve or "ascend" into the 5th Dimension, bypassing the 4th dimension of time, so that we are no longer at the effect of time, but can use it as a kind of artist's medium.

A few specific examples:

The End of Time in 2012 is an idea has been deeply linked with shamanic medicine, and with the calendrics of the Maya, ever since the late Terence McKenna and his brother Dennis did their original researches in the Amazon basin on 1971. While there has been debate about the calculations of Jose Arguelles -- pioneer of today's Mayan calendar studies in The Mayan Factor -- there is little doubt that some of the Mayan calendar systems, especially the "long count" that began in 3114 BC, do point to some moment of transformation coming in or around 2012.

The People to Read:

The leading researcher in the field is John Major Jenkins, whose seminal works of scholarship in Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 (1994) and Galactic Alignment (2004) prove that the Maya, and the astronomers of the Vedic and Egyptian traditions, all understood the key piece of knowledge: the precession of the equinoxes backward through the zodaic in a cycle of more than 25,000 solar years that Plato called the Great Year, and that the Maya also considered a circle of spiritual evolution toward higher consciousness. Jenkins demonstrates how the crucial Mayan "long count" of 5,126 years from 3,114 BC through 2012 culminates in a moment of extreme cosmic power and significance, when the winter solstice sun on Dec. 21, 2012 aligns precisely with the point where the ecliptic -- the path of the Sun through the zodiac -- crosses line of the galactic center, positioned late in the sign of Sagittarius, just before the cusp of Capricorn.


 

Another candidate for the moment of awakening has been proposed by the Swedish scholar Carl Johan Calleman, who calculates the ending of the long count on October 28, 2011 because this is the date of a rare synchrony: a 260-day tzolkin cycle and a new 360-day tun both begin on the same day. In Calleman's view, the period of almost 13 years from January 1999 through October 2011 are a 13-tun Galactic Creation Cycle in which seven "Days" of progress toward spiritual consciousness alternate with six "Nights" of regression away from spirit, until this cycle oscillates toward the moment of awakening. Calleman's new book The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness was published in April, 2004. The Mythic Preludes in last two Universal Festival Calendars for December have focused on Calleman's ideas. See especially UFC December 2003.

Terence McKenna first presented his Time Wave Zero paradigm in 1975. This design maps out all of human history, of each person and of whole societies and countries whose lives may span millennia, in a recurring fractal pattern that moves up and down between freedom and restriction, happiness and suffering, and the other positive/negative, good/bad features of polarity consciousness as we've experienced it so far the third density (read "third dimension") where we think we live. As human history has moved from ancient to modern times and to the present moment, the fractal pattern has occurred at shorter and shorter intervals; and it will keep accelerating in the years to come. If anything, the roller coaster ride will rocket along faster, plunge deeper and zoom higher than anything we've known or even imagined. According to Time Wave Zero, the fractal pattern runs out, and the carnival ride ends, in December 2012. Polarity consciousness is no more. We experience time, and everything else, as unity, not as a series of conflicts and oppositions.

In recent years, new studies of the controversial Time Wave Zero design have refined it to a greater degree of accuracy. The Mayan Mysteries

The Mind of James Donahue

One of the great mysteries of modern times is the Dresden Codex, one of the few surviving books from the ancient Mayan civilization that existed in Central and South America.

This book, decoded by a German scholar in 1880, opened a door to discovery of the brilliant minds of the Mayans. The Codex is filled with numeric equations based upon the movement of the planets, the sun and the stars. The book and other encoded inscriptions on buildings and surviving stone monuments found mostly in the ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula, include a calendar that is so accurate it puts our present system of measuring years to shame.

Unfortunately, the Spanish Conquistadors, under the command of Hernan Cortes, conquered the Aztec Empire in 1521. Under the name of the Roman Catholic Church, Cortes set about destroying what he considered a pagan civilization. They did not know that the Aztecs were occupying a land that was once the home of a defunct Mayan culture. The Conquistadors raided the buildings and burned books, biographies, musical compositions, histories, genealogies and other Mayan works, thus destroying nearly all trace of this great civilization.

It was significant that the Aztecs were conquered by Cortes because they mistook him to be a god named Quetzalcoatl. This ancient god was a person described as having fair skin and golden hair. Quetzalcoatl was said to have once taught the people of Central and South America, establishing a culture that flourished for hundreds of years. When he left, Quetzalcoatl promised to someday return.

A few of the most precious books of the Mayans survived the pillage. They were probably skillfully hidden by the natives. Even though the Aztecs were not of the Mayan culture, they knew about the calendar and the movements of the planets.

The surviving documents, however, have presented mysteries and a possible end-times prophecy that perplex and even worry us today.

The Mayans were master mathematicians who tinkered with calendars that depicted cycles of the planets. They took a special interest in the movements of the planets Mars and Venus, and knew the cycles of the Sun. They believed that the Earth would reach some kind of synchronization with the universe by Dec. 21, 2012. One Mayan prophecy is that the current Age of Materialism will end on this date.

Since the Winter Solstice occurs at this time each year, when the Earth is tipped to its extreme axis, some people wonder if the Mayans did not foresee a polar shift that would cause a major apocalyptic event, destroying civilization as we know it.

Of further interest is the mysterious Mayan magic number 1,366,560. Authors Adrian Gilbert and Maurice Cotterell in their book The Mayan Prophecies, note that this magic number can be factored to harmonize the cycles of both Venus and Mars in two "yearly" cycles also used by the Maya. They called them the sacred tzolkin, which consisted of 260 days, and the Haab, which measured 365 days.

Gilbert and Cotterell note that the Mayans also used another complex system of counting days related to a starting date they called the Birth of Venus. That date was set at Aug. 13, 3114 BC. This calendar was divided into uinals of 20 days, tuns of 360 days and longer periods of 7,200 days known as the katun, and 144,000 days called the baktun.

The Mayans seemed to believe that the world as we know it would end at the conclusion of the 13th baktun, measuring from the Birth of Venus. That date points to Dec. 21, 2012.

At the time of this writing I have not talked to Aaron C. Donahue about the significance of this date. I do recall him saying that there will not be a poll shift. Aaron warns of a looming apocalyptic nuclear war that will speed the destruction of the Earth's ecological balance and cause the extinction of all life on the planet. He claims that the last woman is alive today, living somewhere in Europe.

Donahue also says that doomsday events like this can be avoided, but it would take a world-wide dismantling of all religious systems that foster both a belief and a desire for an apocalyptic war.

Because we are gods, and creators of our own universe, we humans have the ability to collectively change the future. It is through voluntary submission to angelic influence that we have allowed ourselves to become enslaved by false religious systems and marching like zombies toward our destruction.

I find it interesting that the Mayans and Aztecs recognized a white god figure called Quetzalcoatl, were looking for this entitys return, and they used a complex mathematical calendar that dated to a Birth of Venus.

We know that the Planet Venus is much older than 3114 BC. So what is the significance of that date? And is there a link to Quetzalcoatl?

Remember that the name Lucifer also is an ancient name that means Venus, the morning star.

Did the Mayans remember Lucifer, whom they called Quetzalcoatl, as their progenitor and teacher from this ancient time? Was this the date when our ancestors were placed on this planet following the great flood?

We can speculate on all of these things. Without the vast library of knowledge that was destroyed by Cortes in the name of the church, we may never know the answers to these questions.
